Artwork description

Original drawing. 18×24 Pen and Ink on paper.

Inspired mostly by the films, “7 Faces of Dr. Lao” and “Dead Silence,” this piece was drawn by the artist out of appreciation for the “strange traveler” archetype found in history’s most iconic stories.

The story this drawing conveys is about a traveling showman named Dr. Van Naster (center of piece) who carries with him a troupe of puppets, each with their own unique design and character. While most puppets are inanimate without operation, Dr. Van Naster’s collection seem to have a life of their own that aren’t necessarily controlled by the hands surrounding them, but rather, supervised.

Nobody knows what Van Naster’s true intentions are only that he seems to want to put on the show of a lifetime and forever change the lives of his audience.

the eye-following stare of each figure is meant to grab viewers’ attention, enticing them to come closer and study each character’s intricacies. This was intended by the artist so that viewers can be challenged to come up with their own story with each puppet.
