United States, born 1995
Born in Suriname, Alex Liong moved to America at the age of four where he bounced around South Florida before his family finally settled in Coral Springs. At an early age, Alex was already showing prowess in drawing where he would meticulously replicate figures of characters he would read from his comic books. Since then, he has been honing his craft to bring to the world artwork that can be described as a blend of both morbid and beautiful.
Alex’s interest in the dark genre started when he picked up the book, “In a Dark, Dark Room And Other Scary Stories,” in Elementary school where he became fascinated with a story about a woman who loses her head. His morbid curiosity would develop further growing up as he delved into the works of Edgar Allan Poe, John Carpenter, Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, George Romero, and Wes Craven (to name a few). At the same time, visual artists such as Alex Ross, H.R. Giger, Frank Miller, and Zdzisław Beksiński would help shape Alex into the artist he is today.
While some would claim that Dark Art holds no artistic value, Alex Liong seems to prove otherwise. At the age of 18, Alex would win first place in an FCCLA states drawing competition with a piece that most would probably describe as “macabre.” In recent years, he’s had two of his pieces on display in two separate exhibitions hosted by City Arts Orlando (“Edgar Allan Poe” and “The Art of Rock and Roll”). Today, Alex continues finding opportunities to showcase his work so that more people can be introduced to the value of dark art.
Alex currently resides in Coral Springs, FL, creating art in his home. He attends local shows and even travels for work.
“My art is open for interpretation. But I want my audience to know that I don’t see my work as anything inherently dark. In fact, my work makes me really happy. If I can create a nightmare that takes my mind off of a real world terror, I’m going to find much more comfort and happiness in the former.”
