Jorge Humberto Tapia Perez Biography

Germany, born 1983

I was born in 1983 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico and I am a neurosurgeon and artist living in Germany. I consider my art as neoexpresionist. I would like to encourage a reverence for nature and a reflection on human finitude. I deal with death, myths and relationships.
My current series of pictures is largely dedicated to Día de Muertos. For the indigenous peoples of Mexico, life and death belong together, they are part of a cycle. Death is understood as a journey (the journey to Mictlán) and not as an end. From simple legends such as the creation of the Cempasuchil flower (flowers of the dead) extends a deep philosophy of life that death overcomes. The memories are lifted up and seen as the main element of connection with the dead, so that the loved ones who have died remain present through the love of our memory. Signs of the afterlife are also interpreted from natural phenomena, such as the visit of the monarch butterfly in Michoacán. In this way, a natural phenomenon is made omnipresent and confronted directly.
Representing erotic art is a personal project. The change in my life circumstances led me into a deep human development process and I realized that the expression of sexual content was highly taboo. I firmly believe that sex needs a new representation and interpretation by society. Sex is a communicative, connecting, liberating act and deserves our attention. I want to create a new perspective through explicit art and encourage viewers to think about their own sexuality. More recently, I was aware about the possible connection of death and sex, so that Thanatos and Eros are interacting strongly.
