Leonie Robison is an artist driven to speak out about the wrongs of the world. Her art
reflects this in its underlying themes.
She has made series focusing on war-related topics and feminist issues of female infanticide
and female genital mutilation and has recently been concerned with highlighting existential threats
to the environment and to many species.
Leonie worries about the degradation of our environment caused by profligate water usage,
unsustainable farming practices, spewing forth of chemicals into our waterways, clearing of
land that engenders loss of native habitat.
Imagery of endangered Australian flowers and animals in abstract and semi abstract
representations are used in Leonie’s work to highlight the losses we have sustained and the
diversity we continue to lose. Imagine a world without the delicate beauty of a native flower,
the shade of a majestic tree, a forest to roam in, beautiful fluttering butterflies, the chorus of
birdsong. This is what we risk as we clear land to accommodate the ever-burgeoning human
population.
Aggression being played out on the world stage is of immense concern to Leonie as we
witness war and hostility between countries, the ensuing famine and suffering caused by
this. Particularly egregious is the use of violence and rape targeting women and children.
Leonie’s most recent body of work continues to focus on the need to protect our
environment, but in this series, she has taken a new direction in using imagery of people
representing different attitudes towards the natural world, ranging from greed and the need
to dominate, to contempt, to simple carelessness.
Leonie’s art practice is in the main made up of mixed media paintings and drawings,
incorporating collage and abstract and realistic imagery. These can be layers of papers, paint,
or even antique dolls. Leonie enjoys the extra subtlety and mystique as well as the visual
depth that the juxtaposition of various elements and the subtle layering produces. This
draws in the viewer to a greater appreciation of Leonie’s artistry as well as welcoming a
closer inspection to engender a greater understanding of the issues highlighted and hidden
in each work.
