Maroš Rovňák: Artist Profile
Maroš Rovňák (b. 1972) is a Slovak artist whose work is characterized by a multimedia and interdisciplinary approach. He maintains a critical perspective on social issues, combining media that range from objects and installations to video art, sound art, and group performance. He explores themes connected with the LGBTQIA+ community, identity, power, and death.
His well-known series of textile objects, Corsets (2001), denounces homophobic manifestations in social and political life. With this work, Rovňák became one of the pioneers in addressing LGBTQIA+ issues in Slovak art. The series was also included in the publication Queer!? Visual Arts in Europe 1969-2019.
In recent years, Rovňák has intensively explored Western culture’s attitude toward death. He has processed this exploration in his monographic publication Islands of Nobody (2023) and in several solo and group performances.
He continues to devote himself to topics related to the current status and history of LGBTQIA+ communities, which he has recently begun to explore also in the medium of painting. In this new body of work, his artistic objective is to visually articulate the experience of the uncanny, rooted in Freud's concept of "das Unheimliche." Through this lens, he aims to unveil elements of queer identity that, within a broader societal context, were suppressed or meant to remain hidden. By bringing these subjects to light, his paintings become deliberately uncomfortable and disquieting, forcing a confrontation with what has been deemed unacceptable.
Rovňák currently lives and works in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia.
