Nanosfera Biography

Mexico, born 1975

I was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1975. I have a degree in Physical Sciences at the Complutense University of Madrid in the specialty of Astrophysics. In this field I developed my professional work collaborating with various researchers and projects of the European Space Agency for nearly a decade. In 2010 I left professional astronomy and concentrated fully on my artistic quest under the name of Nanosfera. In 2013 I moved to Mexico City where I established my residency in 2014. Gradually I have incorporated my scientific background into my pictorial proposal in search of a singular synthesis between the artistic and scientific visions of the universe.

I am fascinated by the contemporary scientific vision and how its development has shaped our place in the world. From ancient times man believed that the Earth was the center of the Universe. After all, the sky seems to revolve around us dragging the Sun, the moon and the stars with it. It took many centuries before it was discovered that the Earth, and the rest of the planets, revolved around the Sun. So the Sun had to be the center of the Universe. However, few centuries later it was discovered that the Sun was not more than another star in the periphery of a Galaxy that itself was part of a Universe that contained billions of other galaxies. Then, was our galaxy the center of the Universe? Well, no. And not only that. Definetively the Universe has no center: the privileged central position was, in all cases, only a delusion.
Nowadays, it seems we are living something similar as far as our role in the world is concerned. We live in an anthropocentric culture: the interests of humans are the only important thing and have prevailed over any others. However, it seems that we are wrong again. The scientific evidence points to the fact that we are part of a very complex natural system of intimately related parts and all of them of fundamental importance. If the Universe we live in has no center believing that we are that center makes no sense.
My artistic work starts from these ideas and tries to build a sensitive experience with them. The result are works that move on the border in which the human is enrarece between beauty, mystery and irony. But, at the same time, all the elements represented are symbols about the current context, a moment in which the discoveries of worlds around other stars happen at the same time as climate change, environmental problems and the extinction of species become a growing threat. It is neither science nor scientific illustrations. On the contrary, I play with all this to generate something close to poetry and its search of meaning in this Universe that has none.
