Australia, born 1972
As an artist residing on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, my creative journey delves into the often unsettling and evocative realm of dark surrealism and expressionism. My work is deeply informed by personal experiences, particularly the intense emotions that accompany mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. These internal landscapes become the raw material from which my art takes shape, offering a visual exploration of these complex feelings.
Beyond my personal experiences, I find inspiration in my unique interpretation of the world around me. This perspective, filtered through a lens that often perceives the shadows and nuances, allows me to create pieces that resonate with a certain intensity. My professional background includes working as a concept artist for horror films, a field that has further honed my ability to visualise and bring to life darker and more macabre concepts.
I embrace different techniques and visual approaches as a means to effectively convey specific moods and emotions within my work, often leaning towards aesthetics that evoke a sense of unease or introspection. This exploration is rooted in a long-standing fascination with darker imagery, a fascination that began in childhood born of traumatic experiences. Mediums I employ to create my art range from traditional paintings on canvas to ink visuals on paper to digital artwork.
Influences from both classic and contemporary artists shape my creative vision. The profound and often disturbing works of artists like Goya resonate with me, as does the biomechanical artistry of H.R. Giger and the surreal nightmares of Zdislaw Beksinski. Similarly, the literary worlds crafted by writers such as Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft, with their explorations of the macabre and the unknown, provide a rich source of inspiration. Through my art, I aim to connect with viewers on a visceral level, inviting them to contemplate the darker aspects of the human experience and the world we inhabit.
