TheJSP Art Gallery in Prague is proud to host a solo exhibition titled (IL)LUSIO, showcasing the remarkable works of Czech artist Michal Macků. Launched on October 16, 2024, this exhibition will be open to the public until December 13, offering a rare opportunity to experience Macků’s innovative gelage technique.

Born in 1963 in Bruntál, Michal Macků has established himself as a significant figure in contemporary art, particularly known for his unique approach that combines gelatin and collage. After studying at the Faculty of Technology at the Polytechnic Institute in Brno, he further honed his craft at the Institute of Art Photography in Prague, where he developed his signature style. Macků’s works have gained international recognition and are featured in notable exhibitions across cities such as Paris, London, and Tokyo.

The (IL)LUSIO exhibition marks a pivotal moment for Macků as it reintroduces his artistry to Czech audiences after a considerable hiatus. His gelages are celebrated for their ability to explore the complexities of the human experience through visual deconstruction. The artist skillfully navigates the tension between brutality and fragility, capturing profound emotional narratives that resonate deeply with viewers.

This exhibition, curated by Jaroslaw Sebastian Pastuszak, will showcase the evolution of Macků’s work, highlighting his journey from the expressive black-and-white pieces of the 1990s to his more recent spiritual and abstract creations. Among these are large-format glass objects that transcend traditional artistic boundaries, inviting audiences into dreamlike realms that blur the lines between reality and imagination.

Macků’s latest works exemplify a harmonious fusion of seemingly disparate elements, bridging the physical and spiritual realms while reflecting on the intricate relationship between nature and the human psyche. His monumental glass pieces evoke ethereal landscapes that immerse viewers in an atmosphere suspended between thought and matter.
