Load Gallery Unveils Portals: The Digital Exhibition of Mario Rodríguez’s Esteemed Series
On October 31, Load Gallery launched a solo digital exhibition titled Portals, showcasing the work of Mario Rodríguez (MAREO). This exhibition offers a deep dive into the landscape as a medium for spiritual reflection.
As both an artist and architect, Mareo aims to capture the fundamental essence of landscapes. His precise geometric approach is evident in his skillful use of space, material selection, and the nuanced application of those materials. The minimalist style, combined with a monochromatic color scheme, creates a meditative atmosphere that removes distractions and allows light to take precedence. This thoughtful interplay of light and shadow fosters a sense of spiritual awakening—a realization that unfolds as viewers examine the voids within the cracks and fissures that Mareo expertly reveals.
Mareo employs a multidisciplinary technique that integrates digital media, painting, sculpture, and installation to reinterpret the natural world. He uses elements like cracks, fissures, and undulating lines as symbols of the human experiences of disruption, healing, and growth.
Fascinated by the landscape’s ability to transform, Mareo reflects on the monumental presence of mountains and the subtle erosion of rocks. “I see matter as a concentrated form of light, a medium through which we can observe the ongoing processes of evolution and expansion throughout time,” he shares. This viewpoint shapes his artistic practice, where the intersection of matter and light symbolizes the tension between the earthly and the divine, as well as the visible and the invisible.
Mareo draws from a rich tradition of artists who have explored similar themes of rupture, absence, and transformation. He cites Lucio Fontana’s spatial ideas, particularly the concept of the “cut” as a gesture that opens up endless possibilities. He also finds resonance in Anish Kapoor’s use of voids and reflective surfaces, along with Pierre Soulages’ investigation of light within darkness.
For the first time, Mareo showcases Portals in a fully digital format, complemented by a striking LED sculpture. This addition introduces a tangible aspect to the exhibition, grounding the ethereal concepts presented in the digital pieces. To elevate the sensory experience and evoke his original inspirations, the gallery floor is enveloped in a thick, rolling fog, accompanied by natural scents in the atmosphere.
“My work is a homage to nature, a fusion of landscape abstraction and spiritual exploration that encapsulates the dichotomy between ‘Matter’ in the physical realm and ‘Light’ in the quest for the ethereal and sacred. Through my art, I delve into the intricacies of topography and natural forces, viewing them as living energies in constant motion, shaped and reshaped by the passage of time.”
