Neo Botanica: An Atlas of Artificially Generated Flora
Load gallery is excited to unveil its upcoming exhibition, Neo Botanica: An Atlas of Artificially Generated Flora. This event draws inspiration from a related book and augmented reality project by Vetro Editions, curated by Luca Bendandi and Freya Marshall.
At the heart of the exhibition is the Neo Botanica book, which acts as a modern florilegium, delving into the captivating intersections between art, nature, and technology. It features contributions from 32 pioneering artists and collectives, including renowned figures such as Refik Anadol, Andrés Reisinger, Anna Ridler, Ivona Tau, Monica Rizzolli, and the collective Entangled Others. Visitors to Load gallery will have the chance to explore works from 29 of these exceptional creators, making this one of the gallery’s most ambitious and intellectually engaging exhibitions to date.
The exhibition highlights how contemporary artists utilize AI, CGI, 3D modeling, and programming to craft imaginative botanical environments. These creations include depictions of extinct flowers, unique hybrids that have never existed before, and plant forms shaped through algorithmic processes. The accompanying book not only serves as an impressive publishing achievement but also transforms into an interactive experience through augmented reality features.
Among the featured artists is Refik Anadol, who gained recognition in Barcelona for being the first to project a mapping display onto Casa Batlló in 2022. He will showcase his piece titled The Large Nature Model (LNM) at Load gallery. This innovative work is celebrated as the first open-source generative AI model dedicated to exploring nature. A specific component of LNM, called LNM: Flora, examines millions of floral images and reveals the intelligent biological processes that characterize plant life. By employing natural color palettes and AI-generated imagery, it uncovers hidden structures and patterns within nature, emphasizing the vital role of conservation for our planet’s future.
The artistic duo Entangled Others, comprised of Sofia Crespo from Argentina and Feileacan McCormick from Norway, will present a collection inspired by the natural elements found in the Palau de la Música Catalana. These artworks were specifically designed for the Palau’s 2023-2024 artistic season and pay tribute to architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner on the centenary of his passing.
Throughout history, plants have been emblematic of beauty, fragility, and renewal. In Neo Botanica, these themes are reimagined in light of the pressing realities of climate change. The fusion of botany and digital technology in this project invites viewers to contemplate the delicate balance between nature and technological advancement. The artworks encourage a reevaluation of our relationship with the environment and foster discussions on how technology can be harnessed as a tool for restoration rather than destruction.
