Hecate, the goddess of magic, crossroads, witchcraft and sorcery is often considered synonymous with the cyclical patterns of nature. Portrayed here with her left foot on a tome of magic and attended by a donkey, crocodile, a bat with a head of a cat and a forlorn looking owl.
This is an adaption of William Blake’s 1795 depiction of Hecate in which the leftmost figure is actually a boy. In my interpretation this figure has been changed to look more like a crone, in keeping with Hecate’s feminine triad of maiden, mother and crone.
