Artwork description

This is a self-portrait from my most popular series “Slavic Demonology”. This is a demon that lives in the fields. The most common field demons were Południce (Noonwraiths). They were – depending on a region – women dressed in white dresses wandering between fields of grain or a delicate blue-gray mist floating over the fields in the evening. To become a Noonwraith woman had to die right before or after her wedding.
Południce appeared in the fields when the crops were in bloom, and after the harvest they went away to distant lands, from where they returned next year. The cyclical nature of their stay was a reflection of the Slavic cult of birth and death in nature
