I AM HAPPY! A strange title perhaps? On a graphic poetry book where I share my story about surviving severe individual and systemic trauma. Where I share my healing journey, expressed through my art.

Maybe. But don’t be fooled, it is not a story about staying positive. Or being saved. It is a story about losing hope and finding it again. About failing and getting up and keeping on moving forward. About wanting to forget and needing to remember. About stopping to blame my past and learning to take actions towards living my own life, here, in the now. About learning to trust – and to let go of a shame that is not mine to carry.

But why am I sharing my journey with you? This openly?

Because violence and oppression are so present in all societies, and because we keep on pretending that reality away. And if I speak openly about it, maybe you will too?

I hope you will dare to read and see. And that you leave reading it feeling hopeful. That is my intention. To show not only the misery – but a possible way out of it.

The “act of seeing” itself – is a way out. But what is not shared cannot be seen. What is not spoken cannot be heard.

Dissociation is not only a personal problem or “symptom”. It is a societal one.
A global one. My personal story is after all not so personal – it is a human one.
A story I share with millions of people throughout history, throughout the world.

If we want to change our human history of violence and oppression – individual and systemic – we need to dare to see and speak – and dare to choose happiness. It all starts with our own inner journeys. I have come a long way on mine – and now I dare to be a human again. To be me. To be happy. And to speak.

The book is a mix of poetry and art. Both the words and the pictures are shocking to many. But they are not imaginary. They portray one of the darkest side of humanity.
