In “The Gathering”, Marcel van Beek transforms the morgue into a darkly theatrical stage. A body lies exposed beneath the cold light, mortuary drawers hang open, and a cluster of rats gathers with unsettling liveliness around a gaping hole in the tiled floor. Life, death and decay occupy the same room, collapsing the boundary between the clinical and the grotesque. The strangely cheerful activity of the animals introduces an absurd counterpoint to the stillness of the corpse. With its distorted perspective, muted earth tones and carefully orchestrated details, the work becomes a compelling macabre vision—grim, darkly humorous and disturbingly animated.
