Artwork description
A three-eyed figure, blind and bleeding, holds out a heart on a plate. The eye in the heart still sees.
A three-eyed figure, viewed from the chest up, bleeds from every opening — forehead, eyes, mouth, throat, sternum. They hold out a white plate, and on the plate rests an anatomical heart from which a single, fully-pupilled eye looks back. Red tongues uncoil into the dark blizzard behind.
The three eyes in the head are blind. The eye in the heart sees.
Around the central figure the painting gathers the vocabulary that runs through TSUMETAI’s practice: the plate as offering, the heart as the most precious substance given up, the three eyes of trinity or third sight, the tongues of testimony or fire. *Givin’* reads as an act of sacrifice in which the giver loses what the gift gains. The title is an apocope of giving — a word broken in the same way the body is broken, too far gone to be spoken whole.
