Artwork description
My take on a very iconic subject in art history. St. Anthony the hermit (3rd century A.D.) rejected all worldly vices and went into the desert for twenty years, fasting, meditating, doing penance. During this period he is visited by visions, nightmares, demons, succubi… He is usually portrayed as fighting off lustful beings with grand gestures and agonizing expressions. I show him in an introverted manner, cloaked and huddled to emphasize that the visitations and the demons come from within. It’s more of a Freudian reading about the surpression of illicit desires and transgressive thoughts which fester in the unconscious.
