The Boy in the Cupboard is a deeply personal portrait of my brother, who has special needs. It speaks to the shame and silence society often places on disability — hiding what it doesn’t understand.
The boy sits inside a cupboard, held by puppet strings from a hanger above, cradling a jester doll. These symbols reflect innocence, control, and the burden of masking pain. A mouse watches from above, while disjointed medical elements hint at quiet suffering.
This painting doesn’t just carry emotion — it invites interrogation. Why is he hidden? Why must he perform? Who decides his worth?
With this work, I want to confront the invisibility of those we push to the margins — and offer a space for empathy and truth.
