Angelika Poels Biography

Netherlands, born 1970

The need to experience my world in a different way and delve into a deeper layer. Moving from the ordinary to the extraordinary. I achieve this best by transforming visual images into abstract and surreal forms.

Freedom to work in multiple directions is important to me. This may involve diversity in material choices, mediums, and/or disciplines. Ideas and experimentation are at the core of this approach. I work impulsively based on ideas in my mind and from studies in the form of collages, sketches, or photographs I have taken. Expressing and working from the elements of spatiality, layering, and transparency feel like the most natural process for me.

In the past year, my ideas and thoughts about what I want to incorporate into my canvases or sculptures have evolved. I've realized that I want to transform everyday reality into a different reality for myself. Surreal images emerging in dreams or paintings are just as essential and, in fact, much more enjoyable for me than all the daily images bombarding us. Increasingly, these elements combined with the abstract come to the forefront in my work. A part of me also appreciates the use of darkness in my artworks. This can involve color choices or the intention of evoking a specific thought. I would like to showcase these dark artworks at the Dark Art Movement and Macabre Gallery.
