Artwork description
This piece is a mounted and wearable mask inspired by the traditional Japanese Noh theater. Noh masks have an inherent duality when they are gazed upon: the fixed expression changes depending on the angle of light and the performer’s movements.
Building on this concept and characteristic of masks at large, this work explores the multiplicity of identity. The mask embodies the coexistence of competing emotions like anguish and serenity, strife and acceptance in every individual. It also invites contemplation on the roles we play in society and whether outward appearances distort or reflect our inner truths. Therefore the mask stops being merely decorative or even purely intended for performance but rather as a mirror for introspection.
