Artwork description
‘Forgotten Citadel’ imagines a place where the distinction between rock and ruin has become uncertain. Stacked stones suggest towers, walls, and narrow entrances, but there is little left to explain who might have lived here. Water moves through the openings and around fallen blocks. Bare trees and trailing growth occupy the spaces between them.
The citadel feels half remembered. Its forms retain something of their former order, even as their purpose becomes difficult to recognize. I was interested in that gradual loss of meaning: how a place can remain physically present while its history slips beyond reach.
Graphite gives the stones their structure through contour, shading, and fine marks that describe cracks and worn edges. Watercolor carries blue through the sky and water, opening passages between the heavier forms. Chalk softens portions of the drawing and brings a pale, dry light to the stone. Together, the materials allow some surfaces to remain sharply defined while others seem to recede into the surrounding air.
