Gregory Dalton Biography

United States, born 10211978

Greg Dalton is a painter, draftsman, and printmaker whose work draws on Romanticism, Symbolism, natural history, and the traditions of figurative drawing. Working primarily in oil, graphite, and printmaking, he develops images through careful drawing, layered paint, and gradual tonal modeling. Fossils, ruins, geological formations, sacred figures, and fragments of architecture recur throughout his work.

Dalton studied painting, drawing, and printmaking at California College of Arts and Crafts, with an emphasis on traditional draftsmanship and intaglio techniques. He later earned a Master of Landscape Architecture from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona after working as an artist for Stan Winston Studio. His work draws particularly from the European traditions of Romantic and Symbolist art. His practice examines belief systems through both subject and process; how we construct meaning through religion, mythology, natural history, philosophy, and the physical act of making an image. Landscape and the figure often serve as settings for subjects concerned with memory, mortality, transformation, and the passage of time.

His work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Istanbul, Santa Fe, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Alongside exhibiting, Dalton has spent much of his career working independently and developing a body of paintings, drawings, and prints that share a consistent visual and thematic vocabulary.

Rather than working in discrete series, Dalton tends to return to the same subjects over many years. Natural forms merge with architecture, anatomy, and archaeological remains; figures inhabit landscapes that appear simultaneously ancient and unfamiliar. His paintings are often developed slowly, with an emphasis on drawing, atmosphere, surface, and material permanence.

Dalton currently lives and works in Arizona, where he continues to produce paintings, drawings, and prints.
