‘The Autumn Mask’ takes shape through curling leaves, stems, and fragments of a face. The white eyes interrupt the dense foliage, giving the figure an unsettling stillness. Elsewhere, the features are harder to separate: a leaf becomes a cheek, a stem follows the bridge of the nose, and the mouth disappears into surrounding growth.
Painted in oil on canvas, the work brings together deep reds, burnt orange, ochre, and muted greens. Layers of color give the darker passages depth, while lighter strokes describe the folded edges of leaves. The handling shifts between softly blended areas and more defined marks, allowing the face to emerge gradually from the overlapping forms.
