Artwork description
The desert is a place of exposure, where survival often depends on adaptation rather than strength. Plants and animals take on the appearance of their surroundings, while dried and hardened forms remain long after life has left them.
In this drawing, serpents move through bones, husks, and vegetation until the distinction between animal and plant becomes uncertain. Living forms begin to resemble dead ones, and remnants of decay become structures for new growth. I was interested in this exchange between mimicry, preservation, and transformation.
The drawing was made in ink, watercolor, and chalk on paper. The precision of the ink establishes the underlying forms, while chalk creates softer passages of atmosphere and light. The contrast between the two materials allowed me to move between sharply observed detail and areas that appear weathered, bleached, or partially erased.
