Artwork description
This 25 × 30 foot walking stick mural was painted in oil on wood on the Simon Blatner Building at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in 2003. A pinned walking stick specimen served as the model, allowing close study of the insect’s jointed legs, narrow body, and angular proportions. Enlarging these details to the scale of a building meant working between careful observation and broad passages of paint, using light and shadow to give the slender form volume and weight.
The mural brought the close attention of a natural history study into public space, making a small, easily overlooked creature impossible to miss. It was destroyed in 2015; photographs remain as a record of the work.
