The ‘Petrified Garden’ brings together the language of fossils, armor, and living growth. Leaves and flowers emerge from stone like forms, while the curled body of an insect appears partly buried and partly transformed. Nothing remains in a single state. Plant becomes shell, shell becomes armor, and the insect seems to move between concealment and metamorphosis.

I built the image through layers of watercolor, graphite, and chalk. Watercolor establishes the shifting ground and the saturated passages of green, blue, and rust. Graphite defines the insects, stems, fossils, and branching structures with a more precise, observational line. Chalk softens those contours and creates the pale, powdery surfaces of stone, bone, and dried plant matter. Its opacity allows certain forms to come forward while others seem recede.

The garden is both a place of growth and a record of what has hardened. Fossil and armor suggest protection, but also preservation—the body held in a fixed state. Against them, the insects and plants continue to change. Metamorphosis becomes a movement between states of life, decay, and mineral form.
