Artwork description
‘The Slow Collapse’ depicts a desert landscape caught between rock formation and ruined settlement. Stacked ledges resemble walls and doorways, while loose stones gather below. The painting holds a moment in a gradual process: the structures are still recognizable, but their edges are wearing away.
I was interested in how things come apart over time. A surface erodes, a support weakens, and what once appeared permanent begins to lose its shape. The formations retain traces of order, though it is unclear whether that order came from human hands or the pressures of the earth.
Oil paint and cold wax medium give this subject a physical presence. The wax adds body to the paint, allowing broken marks, ridges, and uneven passages to remain visible. Across the stone forms, these textures suggest accumulated layers and weathered surfaces. In the sky, broader passages of blue, cream, and gray open the space above the crowded ground. The surface carries its own record of buildup and change, echoing the slow erosion within the image.
