Artwork description
Binom is inspired by Matthias Claudius’ poem “Death and the Maiden” (1740–1815), a key text in the European imagination of death. Death appears as the reaper, a central figure in Western iconography, embodying not only fear but inevitability and order. The scythe alludes to the thread of life and recalls its ancient origin as an attribute of the agrarian god Cronos–Saturn, keeper of time and decay. Biblical echoes, such as Jeremiah 9:20, further frame death as an unavoidable presence.
Opposite him stands the girl—naked, fragile, suspended between fear and surrender. Her exposed body carries a subtle erotic tension, not as provocation but as affirmation of life itself: vulnerable, desiring, finite. In her nudity there is no defense, only acceptance. Between both figures unfolds a silent dialogue in which death approaches not as a destroyer, but as a mirror. The work speaks of the threshold where life and death recognize one another—and where meaning arises through acceptance of impermanence.
